Grant Information
Grants made through the Keepers of the Earth Fund range in size from $250 to $20,000 with an average first-time award of $5,000 for projects up to one year in length. First Peoples’ only deadline is September 30. In order to be considered for funding in a particular calendar year, your organization must submit a completed application and budget form to First Peoples Worldwide by September 30.
Funding Criteria
Through the Keepers of the Earth Fund, we are supporting projects with a clear focus on addressing Indigenous development issues (e.g., decision-making, environmental stewardship, land conservation, climate change, etc.).
As with all First Peoples initiatives, our goal through the Keepers of the Earth Fund is to assist Indigenous communities to control their assets and build the capacity to direct their economic futures.
Basic Criteria
- An Indigenous-led organization or group.
- An Indigenous-led organization or group partnering with a fiscal intermediary. Must have an existing written agreement between the two groups. Please submit a copy with application.
- Established and seeking funding for project activities that will be completed outside of the United States.
- Have an organizational bank account.
Project Areas
First Peoples will make grants in the following project areas:
- Defense of Indigenous homelands
- Indigenous stewardship of land and natural resources
- Redressing evictions
- Evicted communities to return to homelands
- Organizational start-up costs for Indigenous-led organizations
- Protection and promotion/honoring of Indigenous knowledge
- Mapping Indigenous homelands
- Co-management of land and resources with others
- Learning exchanges to support Indigenous management and share best practices
- Technology to empower Indigenous communities
- Advocacy
What we do not fund
First Peoples does not currently provide funding for the following:
- Individual applicants
- School applications
- College or university scholarships
- Legal research
- Projects that do not originate from an Indigenous community
- Disaster relief
- Conference fees
- Political lobbying
- Fundraising campaigns
- Endowments
- Deficit financing
- Missionary projects
- Project activities completed within the United States
- Travel to the United States
